We have a new Music Director!

  Matt Sheppard

Matt Sheppard loves playing the violin and performing, however, he has found that his passion and his gifts lie in conducting. “Ironically,” he says, “performing as a member of an ensemble can occasionally create a disconnect from the music itself.” Matt goes on to share that “we often only see the ensemble and the music from the perspective of our own instrument, such as the violin and approach it purely technically at the expense of the music.  As a conductor, I need to know every part even better than the players know them.  The players may know more about the technical performance, but the conductor is responsible for making the musical decision.  As such, without having to worry about the technical limitations of the instruments, a conductor can think solely about the music—a dream job.”

In December, Matt will graduate with three degrees:  Music Education, Violin Performance, and a Bachelor of Arts.  He will audition for the master’s program in conducting in February.  He is currently student teaching in Altoona, splitting his time between junior high and high school in general music, choir, band and orchestra.

Matt grew up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh.  His parents currently reside in downtown Pittsburgh.  And for fun? “I am lucky to say that since I enjoy my job so much, I count work as fun!”  He does find time to bike, travel and spend time with his family.
